Yeah, this is the life. It should be good and all except that I am missing the quarterly income to pay my rents, buy food, records, booze... list goes on. Guess I just have to enjoy while it lasts. Here are more stuff which I've been into for the past couple days.

THE BIG YEAR. I don’t know how to put it but, I guess you simply just got to have faith. Yes. FAITH in Jack Black. In him I trust yo! Not to some crappy bullshit you’d ask hope for to grant your wishes and shit. Blah-blah-blah. Anyway. ‘Nuff of that... so I’m talking about Mr. Black and another one of his fine films. Who would’ve thought I’d only get to discover this flick myself but, now that you guys have read this.. you should as well have merciful belief in him! And I tell ‘ya, he’ll take you there. Wouldn’t be much the same comedy gimmick which he was previously into, but. This… this is simply a laid back movie. A feel-good film as they call it. I didn’t mention for the love of BIRDS, did I?

END OF THE CENTURY. She went away for the holidays. Said she's going to L.A. But she never got there. She never got there. Yeah, this is the story of The Ramones. A good documentary to everyone's favorite punk rock band.

WENDY AND LUCY. It just takes you there and leaves you. You’re waiting for something that would make the lead character in the story be brighter yet it just stays there. Simple straight line, no heavy punches.. just going down. If you’re into stuff like The Squid and the Whale or The Savages, then I’m sure you’d dig this.

HUNG. Anne Heche. Can’t believe I have finished the 3rd season already.

Tuesday is post office day since we all know that yesterday was a holiday. Got to send copies of IRH fanzine to some whom I still owe.. and also for more trades. Everyone should have their zines in the mail soon! Ordered copies of MRR fanzine early this year to distribute locally and glad to see ‘em in the mail today! That was fast! Movie marathons have been activated since the first day of this year. Can't wait to start on my new job pretty soon. Here are the stills to some which I’ve been really into. Too lazy to write something thorough and defined about 'em so just trust Google for now (always). ALL must-see flicks I tell 'ya.. well at least for me, it is.

BIUTIFUL. Fcken eses should be down with this. My man Javier Bardem back with some serious heavy downer shit.

THE MECHANIC. A re-make of the old Bronson gig. Movie contains some audiophile-y scenes that would make you wipe up a vinyl record or maybe play your thousand peso worth of Coltrane wax. Yeah, still can't get over that mint Pink Floyd 2xLP which I passed on just recently.. that thing was on gatefold, should be the 1979 Greece pressed. Motherfcker has a total of 88 versions so.. Anyway, sorry, I'm just saying this is an action packed flick as you see Mr. Statham on the photo doing his thing.

DRIVE. Not sure why Mr. Gosling is slowly becoming everyone's go-to guy nowadays when it comes to lead roles. He's on a streak and surely speed things up on this.. cruisin' into some 'ice cold' cars in the streets of LA. This is like a bad-ass Fast and Furious like flick meets the dark formula of Burn After Reading... I guess. Well. Just watch the damn film yo!

REVANCHE. I'm sure the "indie" kids or fcking hipsters should be all over this. Fcking hate the word indie lately.. "puro ka indie!". It is a good foreign film, a twisted piece of 'art' they call it.

Last December 30th, KR did manage to play its last show… well at least for the year 2011. So let’s count. That makes it a total of two gigs for last year? Not fckin kidding but, WTF man. If only we are to make a list of the local bands “active” at these present times, and check there who’s the laziest of them all, I’m betting for none other than. Well, I’m sure it’d be a long list for local bands that push themselves to be ‘active’ yet nothing really new is going on around ‘em. Do you know what I mean? Talking about a band having same set list every live appearance within 3 months interval of gigs, only realize the need for a ‘practice’ session if there’s shows. Has one CD-r/ demo out from its whole 4 year (even more) existence, has a number of designs available though for band shirts. Usually unnoticeable but happens to a lot that includes us. Hopefully, things would go on smoothly this year with KR and that shit won’t get jinxed up.

LEGARDA.

Supposed to be saying something about the show last 30th so, going back. Not sure if you were able to check out the flyer but there’s a tag there in which it says ‘sludge fest’. Far-out shit man as there’s NOT A SINGLE band on the bill that plays that kind of deal. No Surrogate Prey, no Tsimpayne, no NOTHING.. so I don’t know what’s up with the title not to mention the diverse line-up. But we were invited so I guess that’s something. It has been rare that we get ask to play at shows for some reason, except if one of us is the promoter. So thank you for the invites.
The venue was down in Parañaque which makes it one hell of a ride. We had to get our asses there early because we haven’t practiced in a while. And ‘in a while’ there means our last show which was the Coche Bomba gig. That is like fckin ages if you are to call yourselves a band/ group. Met up with Z and my homie Egg here in QC then we rolled together towards the venue. The toll fee alone was 84 bucks and multiply that by two. Just saying the best way to get around between cities these days is to commute. We arrived at around 20 minutes past 8 in the evening and there we caught up with Mario and Nani right away after unloading our gears. After that we had to eat first as them bad boys have been starving to death. Last meal I had was breakfast so I considered it a really clever idea. After filling our empty bags, we went up to the venue to rehearse. Little did we know that the studio which we were expecting to tune in is already going to be at the venue itself. Yes. From what I heard, these guys operate as a rehearsal studio from M-F then transforms into a venue for shows during weekends. The promoter then slides on a thick curtain as a divider between the stage and the tables and chairs for us not to be seen fucking things up. They would still hear our raw shit obviously. But, still. We badly need to re-group so we carry on. After thirty minutes of furious sweating and re-learning, we said we’re ready and asked the promoter if we could play first. Luckily, we were the first band also in attendance so technically, we could be worthy as openers for the said event. Curtains back and luckily, there were only few kids yet. But not that good since it’s already almost 10pm and the show hasn’t started yet. Few chit-chats later and a few beers, we were then asked to set things up and play.

It’s really uncomfortable and lame for me to be describing our set but I’d say something anyway since this is some sort of a ‘show review’. We got to heat things up, play a couple of our new songs and mixed ‘em with some old shit. Nice set of amps really boosted our energy at its highest level. And… that is all I have to say. Next to us was a band called Ginseng Luzon. I reviewed their demo/ EP whatever from the previous issue of the zine and I’m sure everyone knows them. I also remember asking them for an interview before however I NEVER heard back from them for some reason. At least Mr. Incidental Afterthought himself managed to work shit up with these heads. From what I heard, they play from various scenes/ places though their musical influences are really notable from their output. Last time I saw them play, they rip shit up. That night, they again tear the whole place down. These mad maniacs are no question talented and they show it off in details from their looooooooong sets. Noticed a bit of Shellac overtones? And some gnarly Black Flag meets a Fugazi riff all over that is really bad ass. It becomes experimental at times but that won’t surprise me. Hope they put out a new material soon to chill up their fans. After them was a band called Monochrome. Said to be a shoe gaze group.. and obviously one. Didn’t get the feel of it though.. but they had this projector thing which I find it cool and can’t help but imagine if I’d have that shit in my room or something. Anyway, next to them was a band called Blanix from Bulacan. The band’s name sucks big time, at least for me. But ironically, behind them white shirts and an MT-2, they’re one brilliant monster. These young college-looking-kids are Bulacan’s well kept secret from this point on and they’re the revelation for the evening. With very minimal arsenal from their rig, they managed to surround the venue with a heavy catchy sound that is refreshing even for the fact that we’re digesting them during these unholy hours. They had one cover song from Explosions in the Sky (correct me if I’m wrong) that should clearly tell us what they’re up to. Hope they put out a demo soon and hope I could buy one for myself. Keith and Ebong’s Legarda were next. These guys can match-up I mean go in a ring against Bad Omen for a wrestling battle. A cage match perhaps. Guess what I’m trying to say is that two of the bands I mentioned are the groups which has the most number of gigs in a span of month/ year. It is definitely a good thing so mad props to these guys. So the birthday boy Ebong and the rest of Legarda played a number of new songs. Keith gently points out that the songs were new so, let’s hope for a decent recording from these guys soon. I think I have a copy of their live sessions CD-r which was given to me by Sannee months back. I haven’t checked that out yet. Our homies Jahannam were the last band to play that night. I should’ve said morning instead since they got to play at exactly 2:05 am. Guys from Bulacan still rip their shit up. It’s like listening to your Fall Of Efrafa record on REPEAT. Though I’m not really that much into FoE, I just like their stand on religion.
And that’s it. When we drove back home, we already felt that New Year’s eve vibes in the air. ‘Till next time.

Been sleeping on almost everything these days. Things have been slow, tight. That’s no. 1 on the list for not being able to update this shithole. Second would be, I’ve been busy fixing stuff. Yes. I’m not sure if you’d buy that, but it is partly true. And of course I have been dead lazy.. who cares man. I woke up and all of a sudden it’s January 2012.. that means we’re getting old! “You’re not old school, you’re just OLD” – SS. IT IS though, going to be another year to try and do something new and useful. Travel somewhere else, somewhere beautiful and then save.. ‘think about the future’ sort of shit. It was STILL a good run last year after all the bullshit that (always) gets in the way. Got to put out two issues of the zine and distribute it to friends at shows.. sometimes even got to sell a few. Send ‘em to contacts outside the country, strangers and pretentious assholes. Still have few copies left and still got tons to send in the mail. I have just renewed my PO box rents so the trading goes on. As for IRH, I can’t say how many of these I’m gonna work on this year so, who knows. Haven’t started drilling on the 8th joint but already got few materials for it and couple hints on what to write about and feature. Just keep your eyes open and them mouth shut.

Completed Exposition is a powerviolence group from Osaka, Japan. Again, I got lucky to exchange messages with their front man Yosuke.. here’s what he has to say…

IRH: Hello there Yosuke and the rest of CxEx! How are you? How is Osaka powerviolence hardcore scene doing these days!?

CxEx: Hello IRH! Thank you for giving the chance of this interview! Now, there are no powerviolence bands in Osaka without us. So, powerviolence scene is not good in Osaka. It is also in all over Japan, there are only few powervioloence bands. But,Many hardcore punk bands play with us. Grind core, Thrash hardcore,Crusties...and so on. It is very good thing for us. They give a lot of stimulation and we can enjoy Playing! Of course, I hope more Powerviolence band increase.

IRH: For the unacquainted, please introduce yourself and the rest of the group? Can you share a little bit of history for the band?

CxEx: OK,I'm Yosuke playing the Bass and Vocal on CxEx. Members are classmates of the junior high school and high school times. Yasuhito(Milky skin) on Bass and Vocal. Shinya on Drums. We started CxEx in 2003. We did only the making of tracks for one year.and we released 1st demo tape by ourselves in 2004.
Our 1st show was with Corrupted, Slight Slappers and Frotitude. All of them are bands we admire,I still remember We really enjoyed that night! Then we released two demo tapes. and last year released 1st 7inch from Blurred records. Blurred records is one of the most favorite label, so we tried to make the best stuff. As a result, we were able to complete the stuff can be satisfied with. And I was able to get a good opinion from a lot of people too.

IRH: What has inspired you guys to play such extreme and loud music? Can you share some of the band's major influences?

CxEx: At first we were especially inspired by powerviolence bands of U.S.A moved in 90's. No Comment,Capitalist Casualties,Crossed out,INFEST and so on. In addition,we are influenced by Grind core,Fast core bands all over the world S.O.B,Seein red,Assuck,Senseless Apocalypse,Nukey Pikes,Brujeria is so.

IRH: It seems the hardcore scene there in Japan can be somewhat similar to that of the US' west coast when it comes to new bands coming out carrying the PV (powerviolence) thrashing sound. Can you please comment on that?

CxEx: Surely I seem your thinking is right. Shares information use the e-mail and Myspace and each others are influenced and stimulated. this is very good thing. But,It is not limited between US's west coast and Japan, I think that it is to apply to hardcore punk scene all over the world.

IRH: So I came to learn from that you'd be working on a split with Extortion pretty soon? How did you hook up with these Aussie dudes? How do you feel about this upcoming release?

CxEx: This split is released from RSR managed by Sandro in Germany. Last year he contacted us releasing this split. We didn’t know the Extortion then. But I got the record of Extortion released from SIX WEEKS. When I listened to it, I was really excited!! The tracks are total fuck'n awesome! I listen it every days!
So I'm looking forward to release it. Now we are making the tracks for this split. Of course we do our best. I wish it must be splendid stuff! thanks for their interview carried on IRH, I could know them in detail, and it was really cool!

IRH: Is there any significance with “Completed Exposition/ Stand Alone” or to where you got your name from?

CxEx: The title of EP "STAND ALONE COMPLETED EXPOSITION" is quoted from Japanese Animation and includes various meanings. The one means the position and style of our activity. The other is expressed the text of "S.A.C.E" on the booklet. But only a Japanese may understand the meaning

IRH: Can you also elaborate why chose a title of your EP to be “Progress and Harmony for M----ind”? Is there some sort of a story behind it?

CxEx: It is also very difficult to explain this question other than a Japanese. "Progress and Harmony for M----ind" is quoted from the theme of Japan World Exposition held in OSAKA in1970. And this is the theme of COMPLETED EXPOSITION. The original is "Progress and Harmony for Mankind" But, we think It is personal Mind not Mankind that it is necessary to progress and harmony now.

IRH: I can’t believe you did your first show with good bands such as Corrupted.. how was the first show like? Can you simply describe to us what to expect on a Completed Exposition live set?

CxEx: I can't forget the night until now! In those days we were the unknown band which released only one demo tape. But Kubota-san/Slight Slappers like our tape and recommended us. It was one of the purpose play with Slight Slappers and Corrupted, So I was really glad to be able to realize both at a time. We play 8 or 9 songs on the show. So our show is total about 10 minutes. I try to play without a break by short time.

IRH: How come there were series of demo releases before putting out the much awaited 7”?

CxEx: It cannot help being pleasant that we make tracks. We think it's very important for us releasing the finished tracks as the works. And the demos are important means to have everybody know our self at the good time we hope.

IRH: Is it really hard to put up a show there in Japan or in your city? How many shows do you often play in a month?

CxEx: It is not difficult to put up a show very much. There are about 10 show spot in my local city Osaka-Kyoto. But the conditions are different every show spot,
So the show of my ideal is not always possible. We play about one or two shows in a month.

IRH: Since you guys are pretty much busy as well, can you share to us what you do in life? Day jobs?

CxEx: OK, I'm working at the advertising agency. and my job is designer of Web sites, catalogues and so on. Every day I'm using Illustrator and Photoshop. I look a display maybe about eighteen hours in a day. It's very hard work. But it's very important thing for me. Because the works is same as band activity in a point to make something. It's very creative and stimulate. I hope I can make both good works in what each other influences.

IRH: Which Japanese bands do you really look up to when it comes to formulating your sound and song writing?

CxEx: I have many favorite bands in Japan. Especially Slight Slappers and Senseless Apocalypse give us big influences not only their sound but also the style and position.

IRH: Please correct me if I am wrong but.. I just seem to notice that most bands in Japan tour the US a lot than their neighboring countries. Is it just a coincidence maybe? Can you please comment on that..

CxEx: Surely your view may be right. I think we have many opportunities to get the information of hardcore punk scene of U.S.A. Because the magazines issued in Japan are carrying many bands of U.S.A and Europe every times. And we can also meet some Americans in the hardcore show in Japan. They are very earnest about Japanese bands and We can share information through them. If we are abel to get more informations of the hardcore scene in our neighboring countries, it may increase the bands touring except U.S.A. In this sense,this contact and interview is very good chance for me to know the Philippine and Southeast Asian hardcore scene,I thank you very much!

IRH: Would you consider playing shows from neighboring countries here in Southeast Asia? Has anyone asked you guys to book a Southeast Asian tour?

CxEx: If we can make a chance, we want to play in a lot of countries. Southeast Asia is not the exception. There are no plans to play in Southeast Asia for the moment.

IRH: How often do you guys practice then or even just hangout since all of you are also tight with schedule?

CxEx: We always practice after work once or twice a week. Because our schedule being surely tight,It takes until midnight. But we are keeping this pace and enjoying this time to gather with the member.

IRH: What do you think would separate Completed Exposition’s sound from the rest of powerviolence bands around?

CxEx: When we started COMPLETED EXPOSITION, we tried to make the sound that was not in Japan so far. Formation of the twin basses,Complicated tracks constitution,
The style of fast talking in English...and so on. We tried to bring the new sound taking these elements and making the tracks with style of powerviolence. As a result we think we could get unique grooves. And now we are challenging to make a new style putting various beats to feel speed more.

IRH: Which foreign bands are you really looking forward to play with soon?

CxEx: We hope playing with Dead Radical and Extortion! Both are our partner of next release "7 and we really hope play with!

IRH: What’s next after the Extortion split? Any plans of putting out an LP maybe as well?

CxEx: We plan releasing split "7 with Dead Radical from I DEAL RECORDS after the split with Extortion. But our composition is too late.So we must hurry. And I hope we can start the moving for 1st album in 2009

IRH: There ‘ya go my friend, thanks for taking time to answer these questions! I really appreciate it. Any last words?

CxEx: Thank you for making the chance to take this interview too! I hope that many punks and hardcore listener in Southeast Asia listen to our record triggered by this.

These new projects are, in my opinion, a pinpoint on a laser beam of Misfits thought.

“Doing it with Glenn may work on a short-term basis. I could see us getting together and lining up a bunch of big festivals and a bunch of big shows. But then, when you think about it, where would it leave you when you’re done?

“It wouldn’t leave you in a position where your credibility would be half as good as it is. Sometimes it’s better to be small and secure than it is to be extremely large and totally volatile. And I think our fans are owed the respect of one thought and one vision, and it’s not a parade or a circus for the rest of the world to throw money at. I’d rather be touring happy than rich and miserable.

“I don’t even actually remember (the last time I saw Glenn). It must’ve been at one of his shows where I just said hi, because I have gone to see him when he plays out. Glenn’s shows are like a dark metal kind of show.

“Glenn’s got a little bit of a different atmosphere. I think that he needs to spice it up a little with some of that old Misfits stuff to fill the venues he’s in, and it works. Misfits fans seeing Misfits stuff – it’s always a fun thing for me.”

Can’t blame if you’d feel a little bit surprised to see a ‘rare’ update for this blog.. I know it’s been a while again and this is a perfect time to squeeze in a couple of reasons why. Haha. Well if you don’t bump at me over at the groceries staring at some good ground beef (for my Sunday afternoon spaghetti with meatballs) at the meat section or could be in line at the movie houses, you’d somehow catch me elsewhere round the city. Even possibly more at the few vinyl record bars eyeing to pricey Hendrix shit and old psychedelic/ space rock titles. These things I do to ease out the remaining stress in me. Aside from the usual rotation, I’ve been (again) watching a lot of Sopranos lately and that is what’s taking most of my time when I’m inside my room, after work. I’m still enjoying every minute of it on each episode to think that this is going to be my 3rd run for the series. Yup. I have to mention that I am currently on 4th season which means I already passed Pussy Bonpensiero’s getting whacked and Cifaretto getting hammered by Tony himself. Way off the scene when Bobby Bacala opened up the topic with T’ about how Quasimodo predicted all the shit about the World Trade Center etc., which is hilarious as hell! Real funny shit. Anyway… I just hope I can make all the laziness go away when I’m at home and be productive on working on the zine’s next issue aside from coming up with something to post here. You’ve got that one just right. Unfortunately there still is an upcoming one and it’s safe to say that I still feel excited putting that m’fcker out soon. Aside from the fact that others feel negative on its content, I still think it’s going to be a knockout because the features deserve to be in it. I thought they have something to say and share that’s why you’d see them on the next pages of I Remember Halloween fanzine.

Booooo!!!! for not being able to update this blog more often the past weeks. I also don’t get it either. I have been so much pre-occupied with just trying to sleep recently when I’m at home or just lurking to local forums etc., Busy finding myself a Pitchblack maybe., watching movies, listening to records? Just 101 of them lame-o excuses.
Oh here it is.. IRH #7 is in the works plus KR finally got the ball rollin’- four rehearsals in a row, dishin’ up some new songs plus an appearance at a gig last week. Thought we were going to get jinxed up again man. Now that should be something. Did I mention I have been into a couple of shows consecutively lately? Yup. Both shows we’re crowded and successful. The venue was at least jam-packed with not just the usual band members and their mates attending. Possibly because of the touring bands; Flattbush baby, about two weeks ago and just last week were Atomgevitter and Family Man. Had a great time hangin’ out with the guys from Atomgevitter and Family Man last Monday.. we fetched them at NAIA Terminal 3 and then had a warm dinner over at Emman’s place. After that, they had a taste of Red Horse beer, more chit chats later and then we finally call it a night. I also got to fill-up my shopping bag, thanks to Delusion of Terror’s distro! Checkout the man’s sick list which should also tear up your savings. Seriously. I heard Atomgevitter played their last show ever yesterday over at Mentakab, Temerloh (should be somewhere in Malaysia). Hmmm. Anyway, it was a fucking blast. ‘Till next time.. cheers.

Exploring Panglao. The much awaited seven day vacation has finally come to an end (couple weeks ago, yup this is a delayed post). How I wish things would simply stay that way. No alarm clocks and timers, just pure fun killing time traveling.. no need to think much about anything at all. Just to worry on what’s best for dinner or where to get good coffee by morning. Where to get ice cubes and what time do we checkout. By the sound of it, it is indeed stress free zone baby. Me and my partner were off to another one of our lengthy getaways and this time we got to finally land the beautiful and much talked about island of Bohol / Panglao. I wasn’t that much excited since this place has already been visited by most of the people we know, but in the end I must say that it is worth it. It was a 5-day stretch in Panglao and its highlights were of course its white sand beaches, amazing scenery, great food and placid waters. Nature at its best and all we needed was our sun glasses, toothbrush plus sunblock.. and we’re good.

I have never interviewed a band for postings here at IRH’s blog but just to break the record, this would be the first one ever. Most of the interviews appear on IRH fanzine so.. this is just to give everyone a brief background about Atomgevitter who will be touring here soon! Yes, this July! Now how soon is that!? Here’s what they have to say..

IRH: Hi Roddy, how are you man!? Please feel free to introduce yourself and the rest plus their role in Atomgevitter.

A: Hey Dane, thanks for the interview and support for our world tour! I'm Roddy lead vocals in Atomgevitter, we also got Chef on guitars and German efficency, Munky on Bass and party aster and Tommy on Drums and studio business.

IRH: What’s up with the band’s name?

A: The bands name is German it means Atomic Thunderstorm, a good name to describe our thrash assault no?

IRH: Any notable influences which made you guys decide to form this unit?

A: I think the main influences when we started the band were old bands like Black Flag, Poison Idea, Bad Brains, Heresy and contempory bands we'd seen on tour like Cut The Shit, What happens Next, xKnifedx. I guess once started writing the songs more and more influences have crept in tough, rock, prog, stoner, anything we can play basically!

IRH: For someone who haven’t heard any of your materials as of yet.. how would you describe the band’s musical output?

A: We play really fast, the perfect sound track for an evening of pogo and party :) Our new CD/Tape 'Thrash Ritual' will be available on our tour and has pretty much everything we ever recorded on it, so come to the show, get rocked real hard, pick up the CD/Tape and keep the thrash party running at your grill partys/get togethers all summer!!

IRH: Why choose touring Southeast Asia and not Japan? Or maybe even the US?

A: Well USA or Japan would be cool but I have a lot more contacts in s/e asia who I want to meet and hang out with and we have heard so much about your amazing scene we just have to check it out for ourselves, so come party with us!!

IRH: What do you know about the DIY hardcore punk scene here in the Philippines? What do you expect from your upcoming tour?

A: I have a few cdr's of old Phoillipines hardcore bands I got from Nonoy of Paganfire, but to be honest i dont know much about your contempory scene, cant wait to play with some killer bands and meet the movers and shakers from your side of the pond we call planet earth.

IRH: What’s your favorite Misfits song ever?

A: We used to cover Astro Zombies in our early days so I guess as a band we need to vote for that, but my fave album will always be Earth AD.

IRH: That should do it man… plugs!

A: We're coming a long way and we are super appreciative that we have this opportunity to come play for you folks, please come out and enjoy the shows, we are Bringing family man from Germany with us and I promise you will get a hardcore show you won't forget! See ya at the gigs.

Got to checkout the two Dead shows last weekend.. the band was awesome! Two-piece unit from Australia I’d say most likely influenced by the Melvins and I hear a lot of Helmet plus Big Business stuff going on, though it leans to be experimental at times. Too bad they do not have any material along.. just some patches that you could gently stare on. Onion also made it and I’d say her set in QC was badass. Also got to witness mean performances by Rush ID, Surrogate Prey (first time to see these guys tear the house down! cruel three-piece sludge), Tsimpayne(SERVING TIME!), Caitlyn Bailey (duuuude!@#$%) and a dope one by Eyes of Fire. Got tired of listening to bands with delay pedals on all weekend, them ultra-hyper-geeks when playing live … wayyyy too boring.

It’s been raining since yesterday and it was raining 3s in Dallas earlier. Almost every three-point attempt the Mavs make was automatic basket. Terry’s shot was all over the place and that dude Peja showed off his vintage set shots as if it was his earlier games back when he was in Sacramento. Deymmm.. what can I say? I’m just glad the ATL CHI series is now tied 2-2 and hopefully my man Jamal Crawford will floor down the Bulls in the coming games for them to go head to head with Miami for the Eastern Conference Finals. Yup, fuck Boston.
After the game, the Black Mamba hugged Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.. saying goodbye for this season after getting swept in the second round. 'This is the final game that I'll coach..' were the words coming out of from Phil Jackson’s mouth 20 minutes after the defeat. What an ugly series.

OT: It's been since May 1st that I haven't got to watch good coverage of the Playoffs after Global Destiny decided to take out BTV channel to give way for their NBA Premium offer. I've been trying to get a hold of them since however their hotline was always busy (as expected). Checkout the feedbacks and on-going thread from the provider's page. Greedy bastards.

The Holy Week. If you’re living in the Philippines… this is ideally the most boring moment of the whole year. Agree or disagree, anyone? Unless you’re in Panglao island during these times.. I’m just glad that part -- finally over. Couldn’t turn up the volume on my stereo as loud as I would want to 'cuz my neighbors would again knock on the door to my apartment and ask to turn it down with ‘please…’. Won’t get to step on my dirt pedal to gear up and try out some new Monolith rip-off rrrrriffs. You fake. These goons are mad serious fans for the one they say up there. Observe silence; repent from all your sins. Amen. Since I’m digging this topic… has anyone seen the Jonestown documentary? I know it’s an old one but I must confess I’ve only got to see it last weekend. It’s way off better than those of Michael Moore’s work. Probably because the subject is totally sick and the producer/ director's interest to cover the story is the only thing that was needed. A perfect example on how religion could influence one being to a million. If haven’t seen it yet, better download that shit or go find it in Quiapo. Here are some of the goodies I picked up from last week’s Zine Convention. It was a successful event and a good place to buy/ trade zines plus a lot of merch. I missed buying a couple of demos/ CDs on the table as I was in a hurry to get off because I had an early morning shift the next day. I know… booo! to that. Nice to be present again in the crowd.. also witnessed a tight set by the band called Shirley Steinberg. A lot of people say it’s their last show.. could’ve been better if they’ve putout another material at least before calling it quits. Enough of that... here's what I'm talking about earlier. Could’ve been better match-up if the Pacers have won Game 3 to at least try and even the series on their next home court game against the hyped number 1 seed in the league. Under 2 minutes remaining, the score was tied 84 a piece and I really think Collison should’ve given the ball away to their main guy Granger as he was left open in the middle. Huge efforts became futile from their ever furious front court lead by Hibbert, backed up by my man Hansbrough.. plus of course Foster and McRoberts which makes it look like a royal rumble tag team. Dahntay Jones made a good run at the start of the 3rd period, lifting the team and covering almost half of the bench points made. Another disappointing loss by the Pacers, the Bulls got lucky to get away with another W.

I don’t think this hit the wide screen locally.. I usually checkout the ones that are on and the next in line when I drop by the mall – which is just across the street from my apartment. Though it’s also possible that I missed it… it’s cool, at least I got to save some bucks for it. Got the chance to see the film today and again, I wanted more. When I saw the run time, I got disappointed. Too short for something that you’ve waited for.. let’s say not that long but still counts. It is worth it, way better than Sofia Coppola’s previous one (Marie Antoinette). While rumors says that hipsters flock around these type of movies these days, calling it an ‘art’ film to whatever crap they want to inject, I do not give a shit. “Somewhere” features the minimalistic approach of the director that is what she’s known for, plus the oh-so-quiet / mute stills that is literally full of dead air, embraces the beauty and its unique feel. It's a simple story about a Hollywood actor who feels empty and too bored at his life (also reminds me a lot of the '98 flick Hurlyburly). His only salvation.. his eleven-year-old daughter in which he feels alive when he's with her. Etc. This one is totally laid back, just right for a lazy Friday morning.

It’s really a good thing that the crew from the local DIY forum (not sure if this is setup by NCI) is putting up an agenda such as this one. I’ve been to previous zine cons and all I did there was sold some zines, drink beer… watch cool bands. Last time was when the 2nd issue of IRH came out- should be around summer of ’08. A sweet one, celebrating the significance and value of fanzines and its role on today’s DIY hardcore punk scene. Yep, I guess that has always been the key word, DIY. Always depends on one’s definition for these three words. Blah blah blah.

Will bring copies of the 6th issue for trade/Php20... could also try to bring some old foreign zines for sale.. we'll see. Guerra Mundial will be playing.. cheers.

Where the hell did these guys come from??? This is some intense brutal thrash-HC at its finest! Think DS-13 meets Chokehold! F*ck! Can’t believe I only got to checkout USV just these past days.. that all started when I first got this in the mail. After that, it stayed on top of my playlist almost every day. Maybe I’m just sleeping a lot. I remember getting this piece of wax ‘cuz the record comes out of the Deranged bin. Great catch I must say. There are a number of fillers and it starts out with one: “Music is said to be a gift from God. But there are those who abuse this gift and use notes and lyrics to promote evil…” , after that comes the heavy raw tracks that simply floored me!

Aronofsky did it again. This present time, the guy handpicked a cast which makes the perfect ingredient for a piece that outbursts its line to fit from his great ones like Requiem for a Dream etc. With Black Swan, he again sets his vengeance. Natalie Portman leads as Nina Sayers who acts as a struggling ‘obsessed’ ballet dancer; doing everything she could to grab perfection and attention. With a very supportive mom, continues work politics plus rivalries, she turned herself into a much focused individual. The turn around of this film was when Sayers got selected to play the lead role of her company’s production of Swan Lake. Her director does everything he could to correct the stiff movements to grace the audience and satisfy. But Sayers’ huge stress at work somehow developed her mental illness that eventually turns the plot from a slow ride into a haunting psychological thriller. I say must see.

When I first heard the news that this station was going to be signing off the air for good late last year, I was not affected at all because I haven’t turned on the radio ever since my second year in college. That was the time when I got into the catchy wave of alternative bands from the early 90s – from Yano to E-heads to Candlebox, Tool, Dave Matthews, Smashing Pumpkins, STP and everything in between. I saw this clip earlier and for some reason it felt like there was a flash from within those years that me and my friends would listen to the radio while hanging out. I also remember tuning in to their morning shows with Joey, In The Raw and of course me and my buds winning 6 tickets to the Put3ska show at Music Museum; we got to meet JD and Tabitha when we dropped by their station. The radio still sucks but this station, just like LA has made its mark in the 90s. Wuddap to AMA Makati crew batch '97 haha! Good times.

All the way from Congo.. here's a photo of Ibaka who nailed a dunk from the free throw line! His version was just above the line which erases previous records from His Airness and also the one from Barry. I agree that this guy got robbed yesterday.. this dunk should have registered an automatic 50 right off the counter. Yet again, with all the hype... rhythm and cheers goes to the flow of course in favor of Mr. Griffin who had to dunk over a Kia sponsored car with a choir singing a Space Jam hit.

Jensen answered: "we are not able to make it to Philippines this time. we hope to come some day." ; yup, the answer was clear. Haha. It's always been raining during the afternoons lately.. same case for today. For some reason it feels more like December, not almost summer. Anyway, I made it to the post office though and was able to drop the remaining copies of IRH split with Incidental. Need to print more hopefully this week; also, watch out for the 6th issue of IRH; locals only ishh- that should be out pretty soon. Of course, it will feature interviews from a number of homegrown bands. This afternoon, I received a copy of Fashionable Activism fanzine. Got this from a trade.. just one item in the mail but its looks could kill. Should enjoy reading it in a bit over a hot brewed coffee.. cheers.

This interview was taken from the debut issue of IRH fanzine. Little did I know then that these guys would make it here. Talk about good, good times. For those who do not have a copy of the first one... here's something from it. Also checkout the band's tour diary which can be found at their website.

I took this video clip using my camera at the show in Quezon. Yup, it is dark 'cuz somebody turned off the lights,.. but, you would still feel the intensity.

CONQUEST FOR DEATH in the f'n house! I think these guys don't need any introduction anymore since everyone's familiar with some bands they were from before forming such powerhouse thrash unit. This interview was conducted through e-mail with their frontman Devon. Here's what he has to say..

IRH: After WxHxNx?, what made made you guys decide to form a killer thrash unit again?

D: After WxHxN?, Craig and I played in a band called Colbom and Robert continued playing in Artimus Pyle. In the beginning of 2006 Kiku and I discussed starting a new fast band.

IRH: How did the three of you from WxHxNx hook up with Alex and Kiku and come up with such a great idea of forming CFD!? How was the reaction from most listeners/ supporters of WxHxNx with CFD?

D: Actually, Kiku and Alex and I hooked up with Robert and Craigums. CFD is not an extension of WxHxNx?. I have known Kiku and Alex longer than Robert and Craig. Kiku visits San Francisco pretty regularly so during one of his visits I said he should have a band in California since he is here so often. Alex was a founding member in All You Can Eat, but left the band before we started gigging. Alex, Kiku and I formed CFD, then Craig joined after we wrote most of the songs. We asked Robert to play bass after Brian from Look Back and Laugh and Athena from Voetsek were unable to join us. It was never a plan to be any form of continuation of WxHxNx? I'm not sure, I've never compared them. I think CFD may be a little more metallic in sound.

IRH: Did you get your band's name from a Necros' song? What's up with the name?

D: Yes, I took it from a Necros song because I thought it sounded cool, not because we sound like the Necros.

IRH: I heard about the split you did with Sarjan Hassan. How did it go? How did you plan and come up with such interesting project?

D: We had expressed interest in touring South East Asia in the future and our friends Ahmad and Man in Malaysia organized it. We all agreed that Sarjan Hassan we're a perfect combination for a split.

IRH: By the way wow was your South African tour? How did it go?

D: Our Southern Africa tour was amazing. We played in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Mauritius. We couldn't make our Reunion Island show as our flight was cancelled.

IRH: What Happens Max? Where is he?

D: Max spends his time studying and teaching in both New York City and Tokyo, Japan.

IRH: If Max was around, do you think CFD would still be formed or could it be another WxHxNx 7” or cd that would be out?

D: WxHxNx? stopped playing in 2003, we had no intentions of playing or recording regularly as a band after that time. We are all still friends and WxHxNx? played one song at a CFD show in NYC this summer for fun.

IRH: How would you differentiate the sound and influences of CFD from WxHxNx?

D: We played with punk, hardcore and metal bands in South Africa and mostly metal, thrash and hard rock bands in the other African countries. We met great people and got to see giraffes, zebras, wart hogs, etc, in the wild.

IRH: How was the food there?

D: It was good. We mostly ate Indian food everywhere because the majority of us are vegan / vegetarian. But one of our members ate ostrich steak.

IRH: How was your trip here in the Philippines with AYCE last ‘95? That was like more than a decade already!

D: We had an amazing time in the Philippines. Sometimes it was a little difficult with some culture shock, but our friends took good care of us and showed us a great time. Our shows were big and really fun. I love old corny Pinoy films (Darna, Zuma, etc), hardrock (Juan de la Cruz, Maria Cafra), horror and fantasy comics and martial arts stuff (arnis, eskrima, kali) so it always fun to go shopping in the Phillipines. Not so much to eat for vegans though.

IRH: Do you think CFD would ever make it here in Manila in 2008? What would hinder you from doing so? We could prepare for it and make sure you'd be coming then haha!!

D: I would love to come to the Phillipines again. The things that hinder it are that most of our jobs only allow 3 weeks vacation time a year. When we go to SEA in October we are supposed to play Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and then Australia and New Zealand. However we also want to play Mauritus and make up our missed Reunion Island show as well as Phillipines, Thailand and maybe Hong Kong. So it's all about how much time we have to squeeze shows in.

IRH: Just curious, can you name us your current top 5 record/ release that you listen to?

D: I listen to a lot of metal and hard rock. Most recently I've listened to Deathside (Japan hardcore), Piledriver (Japan), Wrust (Botswana death metal), Upper Crust (hard rock from Boston) and AC/DC.

IRH: You have a new stuff that is Beyond The Hidden Valley and this will be under Give and Take Records, which is based from South Africa as well! What made you decide to put out this one under a foreign label?

D: Our friend Neil at Give and Take was a co-organizer of the tour. We offered to put out the CD for us, which we are very grateful for. We figured it would be easier to have it made there rather than carry CDs with us.

IRH: I really liked the lyrics for "circle pits, not prayer circles".. Can you tell us the story or should i say inspiration behind it in general?

D: In the United States and even parts of South Africa, Christianity in the hard core scene is getting more and more prevalent. Sometimes there are kids handing out religious tracts, testifying between bands and having prayer circles at the end of shows. Often they can be very judgmental, condescending and self-righteous. As a result it is difficult for me to take their “positive” message seriously. I came to see a show, not a church service.

IRH: Is the song “Front Row Tickets..” pertain or in connection with Metallica? Can you tell what it's all about?

D: No, it's not about Metallica. I was at an Iron Maiden show and it was crazy and I imaged what would happen if there was an earthquake at that moment and we got sucked into the earth. Thus, Front Row Tickets to Armageddon. The rest of the lyrical topic matter came later.

IRH: What do you guys do for a living? Do you just make vinyl records?

D: I am a grocer, Craigums works at a mastering studio, Alex edits video and film, Kiku is a carpenter and Robert is a bar tender and roadie.

IRH: Which bands do you like playing with at shows these days there at So Cal?

D: Three of us live in Nor Cal. Robert lives in Wisconsin. Kiku in Japan. We only play on tour. We've only played California on our first tour, most of the bands we played with were touring bands. I really like Hit Me Back and Eskapo. Usually we fly to the region we are touring and practice a few days before tour. I worked nighttime 5pm – 1 am so I have not seen a local band play in over a year.

IRH: Favorite mobster movie?

D: I don't watch mobster movies, more monster movies. Godzilla, Gamera, Orochi, Mexican horror and wrestling films, zombie films, Vincent Price films, Hammer horror films, Creature of the Black Lagoon, Mario Bava and Peter Jackson films, etc.

IRH: Who owns Wajlemac I'm just curious? Do you run it?

D: My girl friend and I run Wajlemac. It is very small and low key. We run it out of our living room.

IRH: Any future projects that you're excited about?

D: Just our Australasiapacific tour in 2008. Maybe a short trip to Japan and Korea soon.

IRH: There it goes.. I really appreciate you taking time to answer these questions Devon. Hope you make it here in Manila! Any last words for the readers?

Everyone was asking for it.. so he sealed the deal. Hoops league already have announced the contenders for this year's slam dunk contest which highlights the Clipp's Air Griffin. Yup, it's showtime baby. After filling most of the highlights reel from the pre-season games, this time it is going to be in an official contest. Jennings (!@$), Ibaka and Mcgee is going to hop in to play supporting roles. Hah, we'll just have to wait and see what happens then... Hoping B. Diddy and his crew gets healthier this year and the coming ones to get a good grip and take home some w's.

The Next Three Days.

Sorry but we have another one of them movie reviews.. I just can’t help it. This time we look up into one of Russell Crowe’s new project that is a follow up to his action-packed role in which he tagged along with Ridley Scott in Body Of Lies. Of course I skipped Robin Hood since I am pretty much sure his act and participation in that flick is futile and is definitely a waste (…did it?). On the other hand, screenwriter / director Paul Haggis did it again although I always thought that Crash sucked big time while Million Dollar Baby is the real deal. On The Next Three Days, it is a must see one and pretty much worth every peso spent on wide screen. I don’t tell much about a movie’s plot because you are reading this on the internet but to just give a bit of a feel into it— well.. as the movie runs, it can be predictable at times but there are scenes where you can just hold your chair tightly as it goes along its crucial moments. I know it would make you watch it if I say that this is much akin to some old good ones like Shawshank Redemption. There ya go, one solid punch. To sum it all up, The Next Three Days is about love, hope, never giving up and embracing our only reasons for living. I did mention that it is an awesome movie did I?
Oh, and that wasn’t Amy Smart but rather it’s Elizabeth Banks. Though I always have thought it was her.

As the title goes, I thought it would be a safe guess that this would turn out like one of those Larry Clark films. Easy to think that since the movie starts with two kids on their skate gears rolling the streets plus the title is somewhat catchy. However as it progresses..specifically when Julianne Moore and Annette Bening’s character shows up, I knew then that The Kids Are All Right won’t disappoint and that I’m up for something good. It is one of them flicks which I’ve look forward on its release after seeing it part of Focus’ roster about a couple months ago. If you have been paying a bit of attention, the previous movie review that was posted here (Greenberg), comes from the same prod. I also was able to catch The American on wide screen but wasn’t that enticed with the feel of it hence not getting a space here. Anyway. The Kids Are All Right is an outrageously funny film considering the simplicity and the wit of its storyline. The originality of its concept is what makes it special- at least for me. It’s a story about a lesbian couple along with their two teenage children who later got to meet their sperm donor “dad” along the way. Mark Ruffalo plays the donor and with him tagging along the trying- to-be-perfect-family, that road gets much bumpier and exciting. It’s an easygoing film perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. After watching the whole of it, I learned that its director Lisa Cholodenko was also the one who did Laurel Canyon and High Art.

I'm sure everyone was looking forward for this match-up.. somehow I got lucky to catch it live at a resort spot in the beautiful shores of Laiya in Batangas yesterday. Talk about road trip- great sunshine, sand, booze, clean sheets, awesome food and calming winds- another fun weekend. Anyway, Margarito in my opinion is the most arrogant "fighter" ever to face our very own Pambansang Kamao. Little did he know that his face would turn up like shit. The trash talkin' cheat-oh should now keep his mouth zipped for the rest of his boxing "career". Sorry dude.

I’ve been diving into a lot of documentary films lately and this is a few of what’s on top of my head that I would like to share. Aside from the sluggish 7th season of House, regular season NBA games which my man Monta Ellis and Blake Griffin rockin’ up the wild wild West!... here’s some of the good flicks I have checked out lately that could also give you some hints for your download bin or simply could go find ‘em elsewhere. A few great ones worth mentioning are as follows. First would be the vinyl marathon “Vinyl” which gets everyone into records make their own piece about this craze for wax collection. Pretty much shows record collectors from different parts of the globe and their huge stash of wax in their basements. They talk about their never ending quest for digging those hard to find ones nor pretty much picking up every title that is on vinyl. Fucking geeks. Hah. Also good stuff like “WU: The Story of The Wu-Tang Clan” which is obviously more interviews and early video clips; how it all began kind of thing from RZA, Method Man, Ghostface K., Raekwon + the rest of this Staten Island kung-fu grip crew. This is indeed their story and much more of a tribute to the late O’DB. Also would recommend exciting stuff like Man on Wire, Well Done Now Sod Off (Chumbawamba), Until The Light Takes Us, Get Thrashed and a whole lot more that I forgot to mention right now.

Scratch. This is a documentary by Doug Pray which is all about hip-hop DJing popularly known as “turntablism”. From the streets of South Bronx to the West Coast in the US, this film erupts with a much detailed view on the scene and the life a DJ starting on digging vinyls everywhere possible, partying and basically showing a bigger picture on the world of scratching which pushes the limits and boundaries of wax to a highly different level. Early minutes of this documentary spots up Theodore Livingston also known as Grand Wizzard Theodore who is credited as the inventor of scratching.. sharing some words about its birth. You’d also see Mix Master Mike talking about how he used cassette tapes to practice his techniques and just move on mixing stuff during the time when he can’t afford getting his own turntable. There’s also chapter for DJ Shadow sharing his love of digging plus you’d get to see the spots where he gets his vinyls- that is a basement literally full of records- a mountain of vinyls. Also a glimpse of a lot of DJs talkin’ bout their experiences and when they first started.. from Grand Mixer DXT, DJ Flare, DJ Premier.. list goes on! The film moves on with more DJs telling stories on how they got in to the world of hiphop, influences, and styles on how they vary and stand out with the rest.

American: The Bill Hicks Story. Title says it all. If you’re a fan of his work, this is simply automatic. If you don’t know him, this should open the door and could simply wake you up.

This is a biography of the man known for his being as a stand-up comedian and a musician. His views on the society, politics, religion and personal issues are pretty much featured on this film from his early auditions in his room, his battle with alcoholism and drugs and then stepping up back into the scene.. until he gets the attention of his country, then the whole world. The animation, photos and flow of this film is a work of art. The visual presentation is simply perfect. He’s all about passion, dedication and just love for what he has started. An acid trip.

We Jam Econo: The Story Of the Minutemen. Again, title says it. What you see is what you get kind of deal. A dense look into the past when punk and hardcore is simply hardcore punk. Yep, it’s their story. “Punk rock changed our lives..” D. Boon, Mike Watt and George Hurley saying things about what it’s like to be a band in their beautiful town of San Pedro, CA. Of course they talk about their early years as a band before making acquaintance with SST.

Film also includes interviews with some notable artists like Jello Biafra, Milo Aukerman, Flea, Ian Mckaye, Thurston Moore, J Mascis and a lot more. This is more like a tribute to D. Boon.. his greatness that would always shadow the world of punk rock in its true meaning.

I would have to say my favorite Misfits song is Horror Business. When I was 12 I heard the Misfits for the first time at my neighbors house. I don't know about the other two in the band, but Skulls is my favorite Misfits song. I'm not really sure why, but it has always stood out to me above the rest of their catalog.
Also, Danzig answers his future question of "Am I Demon" in this song.

Alex said that it reminds him a lot of a song that we wrote (lyrics) called Fornication. "It really is an impossible question to answer; The Misfits have written some of the catchiest toe tapping sing-along punk rock ever in history! The entire Bullet ep and Walk Among Us lp never ever get old, and sound as destructive and exciting as they did back in '82. If I HAD to pick,I'd most likely say... ummm... 'Attitude?' I remember seeing them in Houston,TX when I was a runaway punk street kid on they were on tour with The Necros. Me and some great friends drove down from New Orleans just so we could get an extra show under our belts before they played at home and were completely blown away at their power and volume on stage. You'd think the costumes and makeup were gonna be cheesy live but no, there was a sense of violence I'd only experienced before at Black Flag/Bad Brains shows, and me and my buddies were the main ones in front slamming (this is WAAAY before it was called 'moshing', Ugh)and stage diving til we were broken and bruised. Uh-oh.. some EHG ups here. In The Name Of Suffering review taken from Encyclopaedia Metallum page(by Dragunov on September 9th, 2008)and posting this was inspired by Kick To Kill. Checkout the Eyehategod interview on the current issue of Incidental Afterthought.

I can try to rant and rave about how this is one of the pioneering sludge albums, how it's an incredibly dismal, depressing, and angry album, or go even further and talk about how Eyehategod is seemingly the perfect sludge band. Yeah, yeah, I know, you've heard similar claims before for *insert cult heavy metal band here*. So I won't take that route. Rather, I'll expand on how "some kids just trying to play hardcore" stumbled across one of the bleakest musical sounds one will ever have the pleasure of hearing.

Instantly, one will notice the atrocity that is the sound quality of this recording, which sounds as though it was recorded in an old, small quarters basement that has been in ruins for years, which is now covered in disturbing graffiti and crawling with drug fiends of every kind; the perfect canvas for one ugly (albeit great) painting. The feedback, the dirgy, heavily distorted guitar sound, Mike Williams' pissed off, tortured screaming centered around themes of violence, drug abuse, and depression leave the listener convinced that what they are hearing is REAL, and not a group of people trying to be "extreme" or "shocking".

"Perversion is insanity; lust for rape, a reality..."

Infusing old hardcore punk with a little bit of southern flair and Black Sabbath comes easy for these guys. At first glimpse, it sounds as though they have the serious, down-to-business, old hardcore sound down, and the bluesy Sabbathisms show their faces when the band incorporates their own special touch of NOLA (few and far between here, though they would expand further on this influence on their next album). The music here can go from a heavy, treacherous crawl, to an outburst of quick, grimy punk rock, and sometimes there are really no smooth transitions between tempos, but this method of songwriting just works for the sound that has been crafted here. It eliminates any sense of security the listener may be holding on to, forcing them to just give in to this dirty, oppressive experience.

This is one of the few albums out there in the extreme music world that is, for the lack of a better phrase, genuinely scary. From the opening screeching of feedback on "Depress", to the pummeling crunch of "Run It Into The Ground", and finally to the excellent closing piece that is "Hit A Girl", there will probably be many thoughts flying through one's head. In my case, though, there was only one thought that remained throughout this record's entirety...

"This album is disgusting."

This interview was taken from the first issue of IRH. I’m sure by now almost all of us here know this band since they played a number of shows on their Philippine tour last March of 2009. That was a blast. I remember hanging out with them and chatting ‘till 5am after their show in Quezon. We were simply talking about coffee shops and cigarettes and just about anything that we could think of. Hah. Fun. To those who weren’t able to get a hold of the #1… here’s something for you.

Pazahora is a hardcore punk group from Singapore that plays modern crust/ dark melodic crust or whatever you want to call it. They have just released their CD under Prohibited Projects. I was able to catch Hafiz online on his free time and managed to do a little chat with him. Here's what he has to say..

IRH: hey Hafiz, how's it goin' lately?

PAZAHORA: hey Dane, Yes its been going good lately despite being busted in Malaysia last Saturday by their fascist Muslim cops. They raided a house where we had an after gig party. I think we make too much noise and there's a lot of alcohol and they found cannabis in the house. There was a gig earlier on that i play not with Pazahora but i was sessioning drums for a d-beat band call Distrust. There were like 29 of us including 12 Singaporeans. It was really fucked up and they check all our stuffs. We're brought to the station to get our urine check. It was kinda hilarious as they thought we're like black metal group or something. And yes Malaysia is a conservative country; they have been tracking down 'underground' groups for the past years.

IRH: why? Wasn't there a permit for that show? i hope everythingand everyone there are okay now.

PAZAHORA: No there was no permit on that show and they found out about it. It was in a studio, like a small gig. It's hard to get permits for shows in Malaysia unlike Singapore. They didn't raid the show. They just raid the house that we were hanging out. They get piss when they see alcohol, and the issue of religion was brought up.

IRH: i see. I'm sorry to hear that pal. so do you think getting permits for shows there has something to do with the country being a conservative one and also religion?

PAZAHORA: yes, of course. In Johor (the place where the gig washeld), gigs got raided a few times before back then.

IRH: why was the issue with religion brought up on that incident?

PAZAHORA: aha, because its a Muslim country. As you know Muslims can't drink. They were asking us like " are you all Muslims, why the fuck did you drink? ". And they were shock to see 12 Singaporeans there; we were like telling them " i don't call myself a Muslim because I don't practice it at all" The cops cant do shit to us because there's no ' religous law' in singapore at all. They are just stupid cops. But ya.. after some mindless talking with them we still need to get our urine check.

IRH: okay. sorry i am not that well versed when it comes to their culture. i guess we can't do nothing about that then since it's how they live it. but normally it should just be a simple noise issue with the neighborhood of that place and they should have a search warrant right?

PAZAHORA: Yes, it was just because of a complaint and noise issue. It was just bad luck i guess aha. And yes they didnt show us a search warrant or whatever fuck. It just caught us by surprise and most of us was too drunk to think.
IRH: haha. sounds like you're havin' fun there! anyway how did it end after the urine shit and all?

PAZAHORA: Yes it was fine after that most of us was clean but 5 was positive on cannabis. After hours of bullshiting everybody was release after a warning. aha how surprise and how nice.

IRH: well that experience sounds like one hell of a night for you guys.. so you play drums aside from vocal duties on Pazahora? that's nice. what are the other ones that you do aside from that? other side bands or projects?

PAZAHORA: Yes, i play in some other bands like Under attack which i do vocals and we play some fast hitting thrashcore. I Play guitar in a grindcore band call Hudud. I also have a new band call the scuds playin 77-80's style punkrock which i play guitar with. And i recently also help to play drums for bands like Deviator landing, Distrust, blinded humanity..only when their drummer is unavailable aha.

IRH: hmm.. i'd say you're not into forming bands that much haha! interesting.. how do you manage your time with rehearsals and all with 4 bands and some drum duties?

PAZAHORA: Its really not that hard because im dont have a job and im not really busy most of the time. Im doing some freelance work to get some money but ya its hard not having a full time job. I need to get a real job soon and i hope it doesnt affect my hardcorepunk lifestyle aha.

IRH: going back with Pazahora.. what are your main influences as a band when it comes to your sound and song writing?

PAZAHORA: since the day the band first started we were really i n f l u e n c e b y b a n d s l i k e h i s h e r o i s gone,in//humanity,tragedy,econochrist and alot of scandinavian crust bands. We also love Envy and isis. Ya i think
those bands really influence us alot. We dont even care when people say " oh its just another dark d-beat band " well theres not much band here that is playing this kinda style and we all agree. that this is the most beautiful music that come out of punk aha.

IRH: what about politics? i've read on your page that Pazahora is a political hc punk band? what is your stand on religion? God?

PAZAHORA: Pazahora is a political band from the start. Our lyrics are inspired by the socio/political state of the palce we live in and how fucked up the world is. Our lyrics are mainly viewed in a personal level that anybody can relate to locally or internationally. But now most our lyrics are mainly focus on our local current political situation from immigrant issues, discrimination, free speech or the right to protest. As you know Singapore is a modern totalitarian police state. I know our lyrics cant change the world but at least it can make people think and aware about what happening to our world and our home. and who's the enemy and what were fighting for. Despite a lot of fucking restriction in this shithole called Singapore i try to do my part in any form of activism even though its hard. There are still lots of people that are still fighting here. About religion, i just don't represent any and I don't give a fuck if god exist or not. I just live my life the way i want to not by some being or thing that i can't see at all.

IRH: you'll be doing a split with Kahroeshie on a vinyl 7" right?

PAZAHORA: Yes, it will be out pretty soon maybe before new years. The vinyl is already done but we need to get the artwork finalized. The artwork is done by Raven from Bandung, Indonesia. He plays for a grindcore band Raja singa. Kahroeshie from Malaysia is also another great band and awesome friends. We're glad to be in s split with them.

IRH: do you think you guys can come down here in Manila some day for one night gig?

PAZAHORA: Yes we would love to! I really wanted to play in the Philippines and i i bet its gonna be awesome. Yes maybe sometime next year. Actually depends on the money. Time is not an issue for me though aha.

IRH: what can you say about the thrashcore scene here in SE Asia in general? don't you think there's like 70% of the new groups now a days form a thrash unit? haha!

PAZAHORA: aha, i don't know man. I still think its pretty awesome to see tons of fast bands at shows but sometimes its just too much and most of them sounds the same. I can say some of them are awesome
but most of them are just a waste of time. There's tons of thrash bands in Indonesia I just cant believe it aha it can be in their hundreds! Ok not aha. There's only like 4 'thrash' bands here in Singapore. Like secret seven, under attack, voces inocentes and yogyakarta check them out! Some of those fast bands that I like are Domestik doktrin(Indonesia) taste of flesh(Indonesia), Tanpa batas(Indonesia), Weotskam (Malaysia), Sarhan Hassan (Malaysia), Suara Anak Muda(Malaysia). Yes.

IRH: yeah it's indeed a good thing! thrash fever! how did the previous thrashfest go?

PAZAHORA: Yes, the previous thrashfest went pretty well, its great to see those Malaysian bands like Apparatus, Weotskam, Sarjan Hassan performing here in Singapore for the first time. And yes ' Straight
answer' from jakarta is also awesome. They are like the first hc band from Indonesia that i listen way back. it was great! And it was held in a new venue.. some semi-abandoned school. We went though alot of work to get that space. And finally we succeed. i hope we will still have that space for gigs and shit till then end of the year because the state will be making that place into some corporate art shit space i don't know.

IRH: nice. sounds fun! any more projects in the future?

PAZAHORA: As for Pazahora after the split 7" kahroesh we will try and record new songs for future releases like splits and shit with Crux(australia),Lead 2 nitrate(singapore). I dont know some labels approached us but nothing is concrete right now. We hope to Tour japan next year with Anode. There will be a Japanese version of our album also on cd and a tape version by a german label call Contrazt records.

IRH: cool! looks like there's a lot of things lined up for you. goodluck! i guess that should be it! thank you for your time in doing this little chat interview. any last words for anyone who'd be reading this one?

Can’t believe I survived a 10-day work week, non-stop. Today I’m simply making the most of couple days off since there’s been lots of changes going on at that place lately.. and all I can do is roll. JERRY’S KIDS Is This My World LP

I believe this is the band’s follow up to their initial output / contribution from the This is Boston Not LA compilation which easily became everyone’s favorite record. Got this for 200 bucks.. a steal for its condition and purpose. This one is by Taang! and my little research says that this release has 5 versions. First of it was putout by Xclaim! Records and that was 1983. Hmm. Couldn’t wait to get home from work the day I bought this just to stick the needle into it and play it loud a hundred times. Talk about a perfect anti-stress formula. Raise the f’n curtain.. and you are exposed!

DISCHARGE Grave New World LP

My first Discharge record and the irony of it is that it doesn’t sound like them. Released 1986 by Clay records.. I hear some Sabbath riffs and some hints of metal which makes it easier for me not to think about the band when I put this on. This is minus the D-beat that they’re known for. It’s not that bad though, still it’s Discharge. Same price.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP Red Octopus LP

I’ve been looking for some good old Jefferson Airplane for some time now but too bad I still haven’t found one yet. The band that’s very much closely related with them is this since Grace Slick also plays a role for it. Pretty much the same band in a different name. The rock jams on side B is the best part! I’m glad this didn’t let me down.. played this a number of times today. Great stuff. 350 bucks.

DAMAD/ MEATJACK Split 10” (At A Loss)

I picked this up at eBay for the price of $4 plus the shipping. For some strange reason I was only the one who have bid on this. Fair one for an awesome split. It’s gonna take me 10 more years to complete all Damad stuff but I think this is a good way to start heating things up. I have some of their titles on CD but understand it’s going to hurt a bit on wax. Nah, don’t ever think about it. 992 copies on black vinyl- my little search says. Light!

I even thought it was going to be like them indie-artsy-hipster-friendly films that anyone could also jump on to but.. I’m glad it didn’t. It showed some brilliance after like 30 minutes of hanging on to it. The smart script started to carry its intensity and ball just keeps on going from a dark comedy side to a more meaningful one. Roger Greenberg the main character is played by Mr. Ben Stiller who’s on an unlikely role- that means not them goofy comic Hollywood dominator that he’s know of from his recent works. He is backed-up by none other than Noah Baumback- the writer and director. That’s the deal right there, I mean that guy- Baumback. I didn’t see this coming and I never had some info about this flick not until I finished watching the whole of it (yep, I did) and ended up getting details online. I have thought that the movie is similar to the more depressing and dark cruel tones of The Squid And The Whale, The Savages- those kind of stuff. And it did make a connection, same suspect that is- Baumback. Yes, “The Squid…” and “Margot At The Wedding”, these are his and that’s the reason why I’m writing something about it. Genius. If you want to know more about its main plot you may again use Google and I’m sure it’d take you to its IMDB page or else where. I did mention that the movie is way better than cool, did I? Because it simply is (at least for me).

Exploring El Nido.

I don’t remember writing any of our travel getaways on this blog so I think this still would be a good start. Last year, we hopped in to the islands of Malapascua and Bantayan in Cebu.. I also plan to post pictures of that when I have time. For now, let me share something about our previous getaway. I’m supposed to post something about the trip the day after I got back however I’ve been sleeping since.

So I got back last Tuesday night, a six-day escapade from the stunning islands and beaches of El Nido. After almost 30 years of my existence, this is the only time I’ve got the chance to explore the beauty of this place. It always feels great to be away from traffic, alarm clocks and stress from work although it’s too bad I’m back. Ha. Well. Again, me and my partner tagged along with some of her friends from Accenture and GXS. Others from the group I don’t know which company they slave for. Sometimes it’s easier to be in a group when travelling mainly to save bucks since packages are cheaper in groups and also to explore more at least. But moving on.. If anyone would be going to Palawan.. it should be a must to checkout El Nido which is a more or less 6-hour ride from the city of Puerto Princesa. We hired a van for little comfort because the other way to get there is by bus- without air condition. Our first stop was the Underground River which is situated near Sabang beach. Reminds me of Callao cave in Cagayan, minus the river. Wasn’t really enticed since the smell spoils the experience.. but if you’re into caves, the huge ones, then you’d dig it. We hurriedly drove to El Nido after that and we left at around past 3 in the afternoon.. we got there before 10.

Countless words couldn’t express how much beauty the place has to offer. The next days were all island trips- different lagoons, beaches and shores in every 3 hours, more white sand, swims and dives + lots of them sea foods. 1 kilo of fish is like 40 and a kilo of crab is I think 140 just to give you an idea. So yeah, it’s like eating in Dampa everyday with the sun, sand, and calm blue water around you. Island tours in El Nido are subdivided into Tours A, B, C and D. We were able to take tours A,B and C one day at a time.

It was also raining on numerous occasions and it could’ve been better if it was sunny every day. A walk around the town of El Nido is relaxing.. you’d see those tourist ‘go here’ signs here and there not to mention the much alive club scene at night. There’s also this reggae bar in the middle of the town that’s worth checkin’ out. The band played Tosh, Marley and Sublime tunes all night.

We went home with sun tan skin, sunburns and nice smiles on our faces. Could've been better... ‘till next time..

What Went Wrong?

The whole world was watching when the hostage-drama fiasco last Monday was on-going. I managed to catch it on TV while it was happening… totally shocked when I learned that the taking started as early at around 9AM. Obviously, it didn’t have to end that way. Everyone knows. Kids who like to watch hostage drama flicks would even have a brighter idea on what "could’ve been done”. The bloodshed took lives, what a shame. Now for sure it’s going to be a long blame game. The Police? The Media? You tell us. It’s totally intense, horrifying, stupid display of acts- don’t forget you’re on TV.

Got to drop by at the post this afternoon and in the mail is the current issue of MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL zine! I think the September issue is now available though but here’s one at least for the month of August. I will try to distribute issues of this in the coming months… we’ll see how it goes on this first batch. It still depends on the demand. Maybe once all of these get sold, then I could immediately make a refill or something. I have 5 copies, couple of ‘em already reserved so act fast! I’m a little close to wrapping up the 5th issue of I Remember Halloween fanzine.. let’s say about 65% of it is done. Still far from the finish line? Nah.. I arrived on that percentage since I’m almost through with all the writings, it’s just going to be some layout work that needs to be finished. In that case, it gives me a little bit of time to post stuff here. Yes, so let’s post more shit. Here are some recently acquired records-- please do not ask how much because I think I managed to get them on a fair price for something that’s already out of print and that I really like. But still, have to pay the price- one of my favorite mottos.
Could be one of the most influential thrash group that formed in the late ‘90s. The band doesn’t need introduction at all since I am sure lots of you have listened to their stuff millions of times already. Not to mention Devon and his other band Conquest For Death played a couple of shows here last ’08 and he was also here with All You Can Eat before. A local collective (Take4) also released a collection of their early works on tape format. Where the hell is my copy of that, I still can’t find it till now! I have a couple of their CDs but there’s something special about owning them on vinyl format. I’m not sure why but it feels good that these little things found their new home.

What Happens Next! Little energy and enthusiasm there to start.. Above is their first ever 7” put out by Max’s label, 625. I never had the chance to get a glimpse of what's behind the covers of these releases 'till now. So... it's nice to have the chance to share them here. This record starts the tone right with the anthem W.H.N.? then will go even crazier on the next tracks (..as expected). Enough songs to make me remember the very first time I’ve listened to their shit and how it was then! Reminds me of the never ending hangouts at shows or even not at shows, college days, mixed tapes, meet-ups without the use of cellphones/ text messages, #pinoypunk haha and For The Kids (covering WHN? song at Baguio City was total fun!)- basically all sorts of stuff during that time. Good times.
My copy is yellow covered and obviously on black vinyl which means it’s second pressed. First pressing of these came out black / red labels on white covers. So if you have that... well.., you so you have it haha! Don't stare at it forever, PLAY IT LOUD!

Next is Ahora Mas Que Nunca EP. 2nd 7” to their belt and a follow up to Hollow
Victory 10”. This was put out by Lengua Armada. Consists of seven songs that includes “Who Are You Playing For?” track. Awesome artwork plus cool photos by Chris Boarts Larson.. a sick pop-insert is also included.

Stand Fast 2000 EP. The release before Stand Fast Armageddon Justice Fighter LP. Four songs in this 625 release that includes the Deathside cover.

No Cash.. No Thrash!! Title says it all haha. Craigums originally sent me this when it came out 2003. I still remember the feeling of that afternoon when I got this in the mail! I was totally stoked when this one arrived in my doorstep. Too bad I had to let it go because back then I didn’t had the chance to look for a cheap record player then. I traded it for a CD.. can’t remember which specifically. When I got these 4 records.. this title got the beating first. Great artwork, three solid tracks.

Always the best way to start Sunday morning or any day rather is a hot brewed coffee and a nice record. Agree? Well, that is for me though haha. Today I would like to share this nice piece that I bought from a friend couple months ago. I didn’t think twice nor hesitated the minute it was offered to me thru a text message.. this badass still continues to take enough space in my playlist ever since I got it. We’re talking non-other than Facedowninshit’s first LP – Concrete World. I believe this was self-released by the band 2001. They supported it by booking their own US tour. I tell ‘ya,.. this is totally DIY shit! Silkscreened sleeve and photocopied booklet and at times would look like a zine. I’ve never seen one of this in eBay (at least for the past months I’ve been lurking that page..) considering that FDIS has also been a part of my weekly search strings there. I also had been watching this band’s other releases.. and twice I have seen the Nothing Positive Only Negative LP on clear vinyl… one rare occasion was that no one had bid ‘till the last drop of the second clock- that particular seller was from Japan and starting bid was at 9.99 U$D. Hmmm. The last one I could recall ended up at around 25-30U$D mark for the winning bidder and the seller was from the U$. I guess it’s all about the shipping cost that’s why the earlier one got ignored.

Going back>> this consists of 8 tracks and all of it also appears on their Shit Bloody Shit CD put out by Crimes Against Humanity label. If you want to know more about the band, I suggest you pick up the Incidental Afterthought issue with the FDIS interview in it, or again, Google. ‘Till next time..

The blogging continues. Still commin’ at 'ya dawggg!!!! There’s been lots of stuff going on the past days.. on this page alone- hundreds! HAHA! Last Saturday Carburetor Dung played their 2nd to the last show. All the bands were awesome that night but in my opinion, Ginseng, Rush ID, Dung and Legarda owned it. It was my first time to see the band Ginseng and I heard they did put out a demo already. Hope I could get a hand of that soon! Other bands that played were Throw, Bad Omen and Eyes Of Fire.. plus KR. Well, before.. it was ‘rich crusties on iPods’ – now, yes. Lame. Well, it is what it is. Here's some photos I shot that night. Dung's first night @ Ten02 QC

Dung’s first night of their tour here in the Philippines. Fair crowd on a Thursday night. Kids showed their support to the visiting Malaysian outfit.. shared some cheers. Checked out their stuff at the table and able to pick ones for myself. Needs. Always feels great hangin’ out at shows.. I just feel it erases most of the stress picked up from a crazy work week. Fuck work. Dung’s in town. They’ll still be playing couple more shows including one tonight in Makati.. and tomorrow again at the go-to venue nowadays- Ten02. Show your support if you’re free. Great sets last night from Republika De Lata (first time to see 'em.. great stuff + Clash cover), Bad Omen, RDA, Most Offensive, Pink Cow and of course mighty Dung. Not sure if I will be able to drop by tonight in Makati.. but, we’ll see. Cheers!

We immediately ran off to Promenade over at Greenhills after I got out from work at around 10 yesterday evening. The reason was to see this film. Been wanting to checkout this flick for the past days however me and my partner always got caught up in traffic hence not able to make it on time. Either we’re stuck on the road.. or seats gets sold out. Waste. This time, we made it.. started 10:40pm on a Sunday night but still all seats were almost taken. >>> This movie is by Christopher Nolan. Yes, the one who also directed Memento (another sick movie that I highly recommend). On the first set of scenes, I immediately got baffled on what was going on and what was lead character’s purpose and how will it go. The beginning somehow correlates to its end.. all about entering someone else’s mind through a series of dream raids that could change something in the end. Then the action continues- from one chasing scene to another- it never stopped. The end reminds me a lot of Kubrick’s stuff where it makes you think twice… just total mind fnck. If you want to checkout the exact plot, you may refer to some websites for that but.. this could be one of the good films I saw on wide screen this year. 2 hours 20+mins, worth it.
